The significance of the loophole: emails, passwords, credit card numbers, if they were typed into the computer, and actually all correspondence that emanated from a computer using "Windows 2000" is susceptible to tracking. "This is not a theoretical discovery. Anyone who exploits this security loophole can definitely access this information on other computers," remarked Dr. Pinkas.

Various security vulnerabilities in different computer operating systems have been discovered over the years. Previous security breaches have enabled hackers to follow correspondence from a computer from the time of the breach onwards. This newly discovered loophole, exposed by a team of researchers which included, along with Dr. Pinkas, Hebrew University graduate students Zvi Gutterman and Leo Dorrendorf, enables hackers to access information that was sent from the computer prior to the security breach and even information that is no longer stored on the computer.

The researchers found the security loophole in the random number generator of Windows. This is a program which is, among other things, a critical building block for file and email encryption, and for the SSL encryption protocol which is used by all Internet browsers.

For example: in correspondence with a bank or any other website that requires typing in a password, or a credit card number, the random number generator creates a random encryption key, which is used to encrypt the communication so that only the relevant website can read the correspondence. The research team found a way to decipher how the random number generator works and thereby compute previous and future encryption keys used by the computer, and eavesdrop on private communication.

"There is no doubt that hacking into a computer using our method requires advanced planning. On the other hand, simpler security breaches also require planning, and I believe that there is room for concern at large companies, or for people who manage sensitive information using their computers, who should understand that the privacy of their data is at risk," explained Dr. Pinkas.

According to the researchers, who have already notified the Microsoft security response team about their discovery, although they only checked "Windows 2000" (which is currently the third most popular operating system in use) they assume that newer versions of "Windows", XP and Vista, use similar random number generators and may also be vulnerable.

Their conclusion is that Microsoft needs to improve the way it encodes information. They recommend that Microsoft publish the code of their random number generators as well as of other elements of the "Windows" security system to enable computer security experts outside Microsoft to evaluate their effectiveness.

The results of the research are described in a scientific paper entitled "Cryptanalysis of the Windows Random Number Generator", which was presented at the ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security which took place in Alexandria, Virginia on October 29 - November 2, 2007.

Computing

Originally conceived as a showcase of modern and historic computing techniques, the Computing gallery has in recent years become more focused on the historical aspects of early electronic computers.

In 1991 we built the world's first complete Difference Engine No. 2 from plans drawn up by Charles Babbage in the 19th century. As a content of memory, software in principle can be changed without the adjustment to the static paradigm of the hardware thus without the remanufacturing thereof. Commonly software is of an algorithmic form which translates into being to a sequence of machine instructions. Some software, however, is of a relational form which translates into being the map of a realization network (see VHDL).

Software is a program that enables a computer to perform a specific task, as opposed to the physical components of the system (hardware). This includes application software such as a word processor, which enables a user to perform a task, and system software such as an operating system, which enables other software to run properly, by interfacing with hardware and with other software.

The term "software" was first used in this sense by John W. Tukey in 1957. In computer science and software engineering, computer software is all computer programs. The concept of reading different sequences of instructions into the memory of a device to control computations was invented by Charles Babbage as part of his difference engine. The theory that is the basis for most modern software was first proposed by Alan Turing in his 1935 essay Computable numbers with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem.

Computer Hardware

Computer Hardware is the physical part of a computer, including the digital circuitry, as distinguished from the computer software that executes within the hardware. The hardware of a computer is infrequently changed, in comparison with software and data, which are "soft" in the sense that they are readily created, modified or erased on the computer. Firmware is a special type of software that rarely, if ever, needs to be changed and so is stored on hardware devices such as read-only memory (ROM) where it is not readily changed (and is therefore "firm" rather than just "soft").

Most computer hardware is not seen by normal users. It is in embedded systems in automobiles, microwave ovens, electrocardiograph machines, compact disc players, and other devices. Personal computers, the computer hardware familiar to most people, form only a small minority of computers (about 0.2% of all new computers produced in 2003) Market statistics.

Films of Fact

Films of Fact is an exhibition about scientific films and television programmes. It deals with when they started and the four major genres that developed up to 1965. In the Victorian era, there were two great media of science engagement: the printed book and the public museum. Science and invention gave birth in 1895 to cinema, a new medium that was soon challenging these older media. Today there are nature and technology films, those on science’s social mission, and those that simply convey the content and excitement of science. Each of these types of science programming was invented at a specific point in the last 110 years. And, if you go back and look, you can see how each was the product of particular historical circumstances.

Nature films are the oldest science film genre. The first examples were shown at the Alhambra Music Hall, London, in August 1903. After the ballet and the conjuror came the scientific films. The programme alternated greatly magnified shots of cheese mites and other organisms filmed down a microscope with whimsical animal films featuring the antics of frogs and tortoises. Nature films immediately became established as a popular genre of science on screen, as they continue to be today.

Film-makers also turned their cameras on the new technologies that were transforming life in the early 20th century. Then, from the 1930s, documentary film-makers began to use self-consciously artistic styles of film-making they had learnt from Russian films. These new documentaries used artistically angled shots, deliberate contrasts and rapid editing to celebrate innovations such as telephony, aircraft, electricity and express railways. Enthusiasm for technology has continued to be a strong feature of scientific films and TV.

The economic Depression of the 1930s affected both scientists and film-makers. This gave birth to a new kind of documentary, which used science to identify social problems and also proposed scientific planning to solve them. Nutrition was the key example. The 1936 film Enough to Eat? summarised the shocking conclusion of John Orr’s study Food, Health and Income that half the British population earned too little to afford a properly nutritious diet. Science films with this kind of moral message became rare during the Cold War, but resurfaced with the rise of the environmental movement from the 1970s.

Both programme producers and scientists had an influence on the development of science on television. Although TV broadcasting had started in 1936, its real development came in the 1950s. At this time, producers were developing the medium so that it played to the strengths of live broadcast. And, as television became a mass medium, scientists increasingly tried to influence how it represented science. The conclusion to discussions between scientists and broadcasters came in 1966 when Aubrey Singer, the Head of the BBC Science Department, ruled that 'the televising of science is a process of television … therefore … priority must be given to the medium rather than scientific pedantry'.

Williams tube, mercury delay-line and two wire delay-line stores, 1950s

Examples of digital information storage devices used in computers of the 1950s. In the The Williams Tube (top), information is stored as an electrostatic charge held by the phosphor coating on the screen which glows when struck by electrons. The pattern of charges is continuously refreshed and represents the digital information being stored. The operation of delay-line storage devices is based on the fact that sound waves travel more slowly than electrical impulses. Electrical signals are converted to sound waves by magnetic coils at one end and sent down a tube containing mercury, or a nickel wire. These signals are reconverted at the far end to electrical signals. By recirculating the signals continously the device stores information and acts as a memory.

HP’s Memory Spots Offer Up Button-Sized Bits Of Video, Photos

It’s sometime in the future and you come across a movie poster, a book cover, or a flyer that has a “memory spot” on it, a small, little dot that, when you place your cellphone or iPod video or other handy gadget over it, causes a series of photos or video clips to appear on the screen. So if we’re talking about a movie poster, your cellphone would suddenly start playing the trailer on its screen. If it’s a book cover, you’d get a slideshow of illustrations or an audio clip of the author explaining what the book is about, if it’s a flyer then it could be a commercial.

It’s a new idea from Hewlitt-Packard’s research labs in Bristol, England. The company has no idea what kind of a product or use it will have, or even if they will be the ones to sell it or a company they might partner up with, but for now they think it’s a clever breakthrough.

The dot itself, the “memory spot”, is actually a small computer about 2mm to 4mm square that has a wireless transmitter inside of it. It can be loaded with 256kb to 4GB worth of data and can transfer that data to a friendly device at a speed of 10MB per second (ten times faster than Bluetooth). HP says they could print them up on sheets as self-adhesive dots and you could stick them on whatever you wanted. You could even have them embedded into a sheet of paper.

Its enough to store a collection of photos, a body of text, or a short video clip so that any device that’s programmed to connect to it – a PDA, cellphone, mp3 player, camera, printer, could instantly grab and play/print the contents.

It doesn’t use a battery, instead feeding off of the energy sent to it by the cellphone or handheld device that’s trying to scan it. You would see the memory dot and then turn on your cellphone and direct your phone to “find memory dot” where it would broadcast a scanning signal. The signal itself would hit the memory dot and be enough to power it, wake it up, and have it send back a signal to your phone saying something like ”I’m here, here’s the fun video clip I have” and then your phone would tell you what it had found and ask you if you wanted to watch the video clip inside. Its a process called Inductive Coupling.

All of this reflects their initial prototypes and of course, as with all technology, it’s expected that their Memory Spots will grow more sophisticated as the years pass, with the ability to hold more and more content.

HP is currently exploring the possibilities (and the hope is by making this announcement interested parties will come knocking on their door) and here’s their hopeful uses:

-- Medical records: Embed a Memory Spot chip into a hospital patient's wrist band and full medical and drug records can be kept securely available.

-- Audio photo: Attach a chip to the prints of photographs and add music, commentary or ambient sound to enhance the enjoyment of viewing photos.

-- Digital postcards: Send a traditional holiday postcard to family and friends with a chip containing digital pictures of a vacation, plus sounds and even video clips.

-- Document notes: A Memory Spot chip attached to a paper document can include a history of all the corrections and additions made to the text, as well as voice notes and graphical images.

-- Perfect photocopies: A Memory Spot chip attached to a cover sheet eliminates the need to copy the original document. Just read the perfect digital version into the photocopier and the result will be sharp output every time, no matter how many copies are needed, and avoiding any possibility of the originals jamming in the feeder.

-- Security passes: Add a chip to an identity card or security pass for the best of both worlds -- a handy card with secure, relevant digital information included.

-- Anti-counterfeit tags: Counterfeit drugs are a significant problem globally. Memory Spot chips can contain secure information about the manufacture and quality of pharmaceuticals. When added to a drug container, this can prove their authenticity. A similar process could be used to verify high-value engineering and aviation components.

Tiny? We believe the primary purpose of digital information is to support your creative idea generation. Images and text engage complementary cognitive subsystems. Each collection of information resources is represented as a connected whole. This promotes information discovery, the emergence of new ideas in the context of information. Temporal visual composition generates a continuously evolving informationscape. Agents work together with you to:
# find relevant information;
# create visual bookmarks with clippings from documents;
# compose the visual bookmarks;
# create meaning;
# set the stage for the emergence of new ideas.

Generative agents help you. This is what is meant by mixed-initiative In order to help you, the agents need to understand what you are interested in. We provide tools for expressing interest, and for designing the space.

generative agent
The generative agent doesn't wait for you to click through links. It composes the space procedurally, based on its model of your interests. It includes a web crawler, that will run through links automatically. The agent will carve the web pages it finds up into sets of information samples. It will periodically place a sample into the visual space for you. When the space gets filled, it will also remove elements. You can turn the agent on and off, and control its speed, using the tape recorder controls.

information samples
The information samples (or clippings) may be images and small chunks of text. Information samples that come from the net include references back to their original web pages. They also may include hyperlinks to other pages. The composition space enables you to navigate from an element to its container, and any hyperlink(s). In this way it works as a graphical collection of bookmarks.

recombinant information
What we think is really cool is how when elements are next to each other, new meanings are suggested through combination. This is like how genes are exchanged through DNA. We call this effect of generating new meanings through remix juxtaposition recombinant information.

element rollover
You can also see each element distinctly by placing your mouse over it. At the same time, descriptive information will be displayed. This is called metadata. You can also edit the metadata.

what-it's-for
You can express yourself with the program to create composition spaces on a topic. These are visual collections of information samples. The spaces may help you get a fresh perspective on materials with which your already familiar. You can also share these composition spaces with others by publishing them on the web. The composition space will act as a special active web page. The people who browse your compositions spaces will be able to modify them with the same tools you have. They can navigate back to the original and hyperlinked documents. They can use the generative capability to bring in more stuff. They can publish their own derivative versions.

The program can also be used by presenters of collections of internet content, especially when it is rich in images. Presenters, such as digital libraries, and catalogs, may wish to use the generative composition space to provide active and fresh views of their collections.

references

Kerne, A., Koh, E., Dworaczyk, B., Mistrot, J.M., Choi, H., Smith, S., Graeber, R., Caruso, D., Webb, A., Hill, R., Albea, J., A Mixed-Initiative System for Representing Collections as Compositions of Image and Text Surrogates,
Proc Joint ACM/IEEE Conf. on Digital Libraries (JCDL), June 2006, Chapel Hill.

Kerne, A., Koh, E., Choi, H., Dworaczyk, B., Smith, S.M., Hill, R., Albea, J., Supporting Creative Learning Experience with Compositions of Image and Text Surrogates, Proc Ed Media 2006, June 2006, Orlando.

Kerne, A., Sundaram, V., Wang, J., Khandelwal, M., Mistrot, J.M. Steve’s mission statement is that there’s no mission statement: what matters most here is to raise the right issues on underlying market trends, bringing to light new software, Internet services and consumer electronic devices. Steve, the floor is yours…”

Well, this is not really a scoop indeed. Let us say that to my knowledge, nobody else before us actually performed this very simple calculation. Basically, I have proceeded in two steps :

1) First of all, thanks to this article from CNN.com, we are told that the well-known research institute IDC has estimated the overall volume of digital information sent last year. Here’s a key excerpt, explaining it all:

“The report, assembled by the technology research firm IDC, sought to account for all the ones and zeros that make up photos, videos, e-mail, Web pages, instant messages, phone calls and other digital content cascading through our world today. The researchers assumed that an average digital file gets replicated three times.

Add it all up and IDC determined that the world generated 161 billion gigabytes — 161 exabytes — of digital information last year.”

Here we are, then. 161 exabytes. Seems rather small ? Well, just think that this represents something like 1 million Libraries of Congress - sorry for our non-American readers.

2) The second step is slightly more subtle. I just recalled an interesting information I had read in Scientific American a couple of years ago: according to Michael Lesker, a researcher from the famous National Science Foundation, a human brain can roughly store 227 MB of information at the same time (and up to 2 GB in a human lifetime). This figure hasn’t been seriously challenged yet, though it still remain uncertain whether there is even the faintest case for comparing brains and PCs, which are really not organised alike.

Well, a simple division and here we go: a “human storage” of all the digital data exchanged in 2006 would require exactly 726 billion humans* - if my assumptions and calculations are correct. You can trust me for the former**, while the latter, of course, remains highly dubious - but wait, who told you this post really meant to be serious ?

Note:

(*): This represents 113 times the actual human population.

(**): Sorry Kari, I have taken for granted that 1 GB = 1024 MB, because I believe both IDC and the NSF to be slightly more scrupulous than disk manufacturers.
